Top 5 Signs of a Failing Ignition
There are many things that need to happen in order to get a car started, but the first is turning the key, or in some cases pressing a button on newer cars. Either way, the ignition is what begins a series of events that gets the car's engine pumping. If you experience no starting or hard starting it could be due to a failing ignition. Look out for these common signs of ignition trouble.
Key won't turn
If the key won't turn be sure that the ignition lock is not engaged by turning the steering wheel back-and-forth until it locks. If the key still will not turn there may be excessive wear inside the ignition that is preventing the key from properly aligning with the key slot. This may require replacing the complete ignition.
A complex symptom that can be caused by various mechanical issues is engine stalling. However, if it is related to the ignition it will most often happen when your car is traveling down the highway, not while idling.
Flickering dash lights
One of the more straightforward signs of an ignition problem is flickering dashboard lights. While it is not very common this occurs it is a relevant sign of a problem. It will usually happen while the vehicle is in motion if the issue is related to the ignition.
No sound from starter motor
If you turn the key and nothing happens there is a good chance that the ignition switch is not able to create the electrical pathway needed to get power from the battery to the starter motor. While this could also be caused by a dead battery you can test this by seeing if other accessories in the car work, such as the radio or power seats, when the key is in the on position. If the battery is not dead it's reasonable to believe there is an ignition issue.
Car does not start
Perhaps the most generic sign of ignition trouble is a car that won't start. You may get your car to start cranking its engine, but it will usually be pretty slow if the ignition is having problems. This is usually because of corrosion on the electrical circuit directly related to the ignition system that is preventing the correct flow of electricity.
