Preparing Your Car for the Driving Season
Summer is upon us and for many people that means roadtrips! While cars and trucks are designed to cover many miles in their lifetime, it is important to prepare your vehicle for any trip in which it will be covering excessive miles. There are a few things you can do to ensure maximum fuel efficiency and smooth driving the whole way, though your best bet is to schedule a full pre-trip inspection. At a minimum here's what you can do to prepare your car for a road trip.
If your vehicle is anywhere near due for an oil change now would be an ideal time to complete it. Running your car past the intended mileage is going to take a toll on the engine's performance and could cause excessive friction. The latter of course will result in irreversible damage under the hood.
One of the most affordable and quickest way to restore your vehicle's performance capabilities is to replace the air filter and the fuel filter. The air filter removes impurities from the air burned by the engine with the fuel, while the fuel filter does the same, but from the gas. Dirty filters will hinder fuel efficiency and cause other performance issues, including a rough idle.
The spark plugs are fed an electrical charge that causes a spark to jump across a tiny gap which ignites the air and fuel mixture. Dirty or corroded spark plugs can result in misfiring, which prevents your car from running smoothly and greatly decreases your miles per gallon.
Fuel Injection Cleaning
Dirty fuel injectors can prevent the proper amount of gas from getting into the combustion chamber. This too will cause numerous poor fuel economy and other engine issues including a rough idle, hard starting or even stalling.
Check the Tires
Healthy tires are critical to a safe and reliable journey. Underinflated tires decrease fuel efficiency and hinder your ability to properly control your car. It's also important to ensure you don't need new tires. Cracked rubber, balding tread or bubbling sidewalls should all be addressed by purchasing new tires.
