9 Things to Check Before a Road Trip

9 Things to Check Before a Road TripAre you planning a road trip this summer? Before you hit the road you will want to ensure that the vehicle you're planning on driving is up to the challenge. The following is a list of items you should check to ensure that your vehicle is not only reliable, but also safe to drive over long distances, or any distances for that matter. If you have any questions be sure to contact your local auto repair shop.

Tires - The tires need to be in good shape if you plan on covering vast distances. Check for balding tread, cracked sidewalls and proper air pressure.

Wipers and Washer Fluid - You don't want to get caught in the rain without working windshield wipers. Additionally, now is a good time to fill up the windshield washer fluid reservoir, so you can clean off a dusty windshield easily while you drive.

Coolant - Low coolant levels can result in engine overheating, which will not only force you to pull over, but it can also cause major engine damage.

Oil - Use the dipstick to check your car's oil to make sure there is sufficient levels. If it has been close to or more than 3,000 miles, be sure to change the oil before your trip.

Lights - Before hitting the road have a friend help you to make sure all exterior lights work. This includes headlights, tail lights, reverse lights and turn signals.

Transmission Fluid - You will also want to check the transmission fluid. Low tranny fluid can cause hard shifting issues which will develop into larger transmission problems that could require major repair.

Air Filter - Checking the air filter is pretty simple on most vehicles. A clean air filter will help ensure maximum fuel efficiency on your trip.

AC System - If you haven't already done so, make sure the AC system in your car is currently working. Getting stuck in a hot car is no fun.

Scheduled Maintenance - Check to see if your car is up to date with all of its scheduled auto maintenance needs, including 30/60/90K services.

Having a professional technician help you get your car ready for a trip is always a smart idea.
