Common Auto Parts that Need Replacement

Common Auto Parts that Need ReplacementAuto repair generally involves replacing certain parts and fluids when problems arise, or even during normal auto maintenance. It is important to understand that replacing parts does not mean installing a whole new engine or transmission. Many auto parts are regularly replaced as parts wear out or reach the end of their expected lifetimes. The following are five parts that are common to be replaced to ensure a reliable ride.

Alternator

The alternator is what powers the electrical system in the vehicle. It generates electricity via a belt system ran off the motion of the motor to power electric windows, lights, the radio and other accessories, as well we keep the battery charged. When electrical issues arise it may be found that the alternator needs to be replaced.

Starter Motor

The starter is what essentially gets the engine up and running. It may be time to replace the starter motor if you hear a click or series of clicks when you turn the key in the ignition, but no other noises. This is the sound of the starter actuating, but not spinning.

Battery

Just like the batteries need to be replaced in your TV remote, your car's battery will need to be replaced at some point. While a battery may die if you leave the lights on or play the radio when the engine is off, it can be jump started and re-charged. Still, though, it will need to be replaced at the end of its lifetime, once it stops being able to hold a charge.

Spark Plugs

The spark plugs are what power the cylinders up and down by igniting the air and fuel mixture to create a small explosion. If they become corroded or otherwise dirty they will not fire when they're supposed to. This results in a poor running engine that can waste fuel and cause additional issues under the hood.

Fuel Filter

The fuel filter is critical for removing contaminants and sediment that is common to find in gasoline from any gas station. If that filter becomes clogged the engine may fail to run.

While some parts, such as the starter and alternator, only need to be replaced on an as needed basis, others are scheduled to be replaced during scheduled auto maintenance, like spark plugs and filters.
