Does My Car Have an Exhaust Leak?
There are some car problems that are much more horrendous than they may seem. One of those being an exhaust leak. Exhaust leaks not only will reduce your vehicle's overall performance but they pose a great risk to your personal health, as well as anyone who may be riding along with you. That is because if the exhaust is able to make its way into the passenger cabin via an AC or heater vent or through another passage, you'll be at risk of inhaling the deadly fumes, which contain carbon monoxide. This colorless, odorless and tasteless gas will knock you out unexpectedly, and chances are you won't wake up again.
If you run into any of these signs that your vehicle may have an exhaust leak be sure to reach out to a local auto repair shop for further diagnosis. In this case, it is definitely better to be safe than sorry.
Increase in Engine Noise
One of the first symptoms you'll probably notice if there's is an exhaust leak is a rumbling noise reverberating from under the hood. The noise will be most audible during acceleration as the increased engine speed will generate more exhaust. As the fumes escape through a hole it will produce the sounds you're hearing. Common locations of an exhaust leak are the exhaust manifold and anywhere there's a joint in the exhaust system.
Gas Pedal Vibrations
Another usual sign of exhaust trouble is a vibration coming from the gas pedal. Depending on the size of the exhaust leak you may also notice constant steering wheel vibrations as well. It will most likely be felt the most during rapid acceleration, but even at an idle a constant leak will produce a vibration.
Decreased Fuel Efficiency
An exhaust leak can decrease fuel efficiency by two miles per gallon or more! This happens since the leak can cause the readings taken by the oxygen sensor, which plays a part in creating the proper air/fuel mixture, to be thrown off. Improper readings could cause the engine to burn excessive amounts of fuel.
The exhaust system plays a very important role in vehicle function. If you think an exhaust leak may be present don't delay having a mechanic check it out, for your own health if nothing else!
